Staying physically fit is key to a long and happy life. The slowing of metabolism and loss of muscle mass can make staying in shape a little harder when you get older. The key is to not get discouraged if you are not seeing the same results as when you were younger. Since your body is changing, you will have to change up the rest of your routine. These are the four most important tips for staying fit after 40.
Change Your Eating Habits
You will likely have to drastically change your diet to stay fit after turning 40. Increasing your lean protein intake is crucial to help you maintain muscle mass and recover after a long workout. Refined carbohydrates should be avoided at all costs because they can absolutely destroy your energy levels. It also recommended to avoid snacking after finishing your dinner.
Drink Lots of Water
While it is important for everyone to drink water on a daily basis, it is even more important as you age. The body naturally starts to lose water at a faster rate in your 40s. This drastically increases your risk of dehydration, which can lead to tiredness, weak muscles and training injuries. Make sure you are drinking at least eight cups of water every day.
Get Plenty of Sleep
The days of feeling refreshed after getting a few hours of sleep are officially over. The brain and body are only able to fully relax when you are sleeping. This relaxation is absolutely crucial to recover after a long day. You simply will not achieve the same results at the gym if you are not getting enough sleep at night. Try to get at least seven hours of sleep every night. You will be amazed at how much better you feel when you are not sleep deprived.
Exercise on Regular Basis
Finding the time to exercise can be difficult when you have a busy schedule. Unfortunately, you are only going to see results when exercising on a regular basis. Instead of going to the gym for an hour a day, try performing short 15-minute high-intensity workouts instead. Since these workouts quickly get the heartrate up, they are great for burning off unwanted fat.
